Secondary School Sport Auckland Tournament Week

Ten sports will hold their secondary school championships in Tāmaki Makaurau from 25th – 31st August. Read about the wonderful events taking part and come along to support the rangatahi!

This year, there is a tournament dinner to welcome all the rangatahi to Tāmaki Makaurau! This is an awesome opportunity for the students to come together to celebrate winter tournament week, meet other sporting students from all over Aotearoa, listen to a panel of sporting legends and share some kai. This dinner is kindly sponsored by NZMA and crafted by The Culinary Collective students and tutors.

School Sports Winter Tournament

NZSS Wrestling Championships

Date: 29th August 2025
Where: Dilworth College, Epsom

An action-packed event not to be missed! An event that consists of some national title holders in both males and females. Held at Dilworth College on the 29th August.

NZSS Boys Rankin Cup (Hockey)
Date: 25th - 30th August
Where: Auckland Hockey Stadium, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga and Kolmar Park, Papatoetoe.

Auckland Hockey are thrilled to be hosting the country’s best 32 secondary schools boys hockey teams for the 2025 Rankin Cup, including defending champions Tauranga Boys’ College. Established in 1923, the Rankin Cup represents the pinnacle of that level of Secondary School boys hockey in New Zealand.

Rankin Cup participants will enjoy playing tournament matches on our newly installed Poligras Paris GT zero turfs, developed for the Paris 2024 Olympics, these are the world’s first carbon zero turfs. Lloyd Elsmore Park turf one was installed in 2023 and turf two was recently replaced in May 2025 alongside new LED floodlight upgrades.

Following first round pool play, the top 16 teams will be competing for the Rankin Cup and the remaining 16 teams vying for the India Shield. The Rankin Cup is named after Sir George Rankin, who was the Governor General of New Zealand from 1930 to 1935. He donated the cup to be awarded to the winner of the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Hockey Championship.

NZSS Skateboarding Championships

Date: 28th – 29th August
Where: SonSk8 Indoor Skate Park, Glenn Innes

SBNZ are proud to present our Secondary Schools Street Skateboarding Championship in Tāmaki Makaurau this August. These two days will bring Aotearoa’s top secondary schoolskateboarders together as they battle it out for the top spots.

NZSSAA 2nd Road Relay Festival

Date: 28th-29th August 2025
Where: Pakuranga Sailing Club

New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association will hold its second two-day Road Relay Schools Festival Event during this year’s 2025 Winter Tournament Week hosted by Pakuranga Athletics Club with the event hub being at the Pakuranga Sailing Club, Howick, Auckland. This event is a only a team event with relays for Individual School Teams on day 1 [Thursday afternoon] and for Interprovincial Regional Teams [like Cross Country] on day two Friday morning. Both relay events will be 4 person teams running a total of 10km
Day 1 – Thursday 28 August 1.00pm – NZSS Individual Schools Road Relay Challenge Event
Day 2 – Friday 29 August 10.00am – NZSS Interprovincial Teams Road Relay Challenge Event (similar format to NZXC Interprovincial Relay)

NZSS Individual Cycling Championships – Northern Tour

Date: 30th – 31st August 2025
Where: Point England Road

The 2025 NZSS Northern Tour is contested in Winter Tournament week and will be on from the 30th-31st of August, run by Cycling New Zealand Schools. Held in Auckland, the Northern Tour includes 3 stages: Individual Time Trial, Hill Clim and Criterium

NZSS Weightlifting Championships

Date: 6th-7th September
Where: Papatoetoe Olympic Weightlifting Club

Weightlifting New Zealand is proud to welcome young athletes from across Aotearoa to the 2025 National Secondary Schools Championships.

This year’s event will take place on September 6th and 7th at Kolmar, Papatoetoe, in the vibrant heart of South Auckland.

UNISS Netball

Date: 25th – 29th August 2025
Where: Auckland Netball, 7 Allison Ferguson Dr, St Johns

UNISS is the Upper North Island Secondary Schools netball tournament, a major event for high school netball teams in New Zealand.

NZSS Lacrosse Championships Girls and Cup Boys
Date: 30th – 31st August
Where: Rosmini College, 36 Dominion Street, Takapuna, North Shore 0622

The NZSS Lacrosse Championships will be taking place on 30-31 August 2025 at Rosmini College. The event will involve the top schools from all over New Zealand region taking part.

NZSS Basketball AA Premiership Zone 1

Date: 28th – 31st August
Where: Bruce Pullman Arena

AA Zone 1 Premiership is a national qualifying tournament held regionally (Northland and Auckland) and organised by Basketball New Zealand and delivered by Auckland Basketball Services Limited on behalf of Basketball Auckland, Counties Manukau Basketball and Waitakere West Auckland Basketball. This tournament is for larger secondary schools around the country, with 7 boys teams and 6 girls teams qualifying for AA Nationals. Schools can only attend tournaments that are located within their zone. The tournament runs from 28-31 August at Pulman Arena.

NZSS Basketball Northern Cup

Date: 25th – 27st August
Where: Bruce Pullman Arena

Northern Cup is a regional tournament organised by Basketball New Zealand and delivered by Auckland Basketball Services Limited on behalf of Basketball Auckland, Counties Manukau Basketball and Waitakere West Auckland Basketball. This tournament gives secondary school students the opportunity to play within a non-qualifying tournament. Schools are encouraged to send their Senior A teams to this event if they have not attended a National Qualifier before, or if they are currently building their basketball programme. There are 3 Cups nationwide, and schools can choose which cup to send their team to (schools are not bound by zones like for other tournaments). The tournament runs from 25-27 August at Pulman Arena.

2025 Kathy Seaward Tournament

Date: 25th – 29th August
Where: Waikaraka park

The 2025 Kathy seaward 24 team Girls Football Tournament is hosted at Waikaraka park the home of Onehunga Sports FC. We hope all players, officials and supporters have an enjoyable time and enjoy some good football. While the games are competitive, we hope fairplay and sportsmanship will not be forgotten.We would like to  thank all those people who have helped to make this tournament possible by giving their time, energy and expertise.

Malcom Cowie Cup

Date: 25th – 29th August
Where: Fred Taylor Park and Huapai Domain

West Coast Rangers Football Club is excited to host the Malcom Cowie Cup at both of our venues out west over tournament week.

Both grounds  (Fred Taylor Park and Huapai Domain) will see great games played between all of the boys schools present.

We welcome all players, coaches, families and officials to our grounds and hope that the week is enjoyable for all and that the games are played in great spirit and with fair play first and foremost.

Bookings:

For every group booking the capacity per tour is 26 students.  They can accommodate teachers and parents above this number.  Please indicate at the time of booking the additional numbers.  If student numbers for example is 50 student+ teachers, they will operate tours back to back.

  • For every 10 paying students they will allow 1 teacher/parent helper – complimentary “free of charge”.
  • Additional students $18pp and teacher/parent helpers $29pp.

Opening hours, duration and tour information:

  • Open daily (first tour 10am).  We can open tours early on request and availability.
  • Allow 1.5 hours.  Your visit will be a 45 minute guided tour, up to 30 minutes in our Step Up interactive zone and optional shopping in our retail store. 
  • Our tours depart hourly and every 15mins if we have bookings of more than 26 students.
  • We require full payment and settlement before travel.  Invoicing is a payment option and to avoid disappointment this is not a payment option on the day of travel and must be pre-arranged.  Let us know at the time of reservation.
